Located in the Old Las Vegas Highway Corridor (along Old Las Vegas Highway to Highway 285 south) and approximately 9 miles southeast of the Santa Fe Plaza, Sunlit Hills is a community of approximately 300 homes set in a rural location on primarily dirt roads. Most lots in Sunlit Hills average 5 acres or more. Sunlit Hills has a rolling terrain of hills and ridges, many with excellent pinon and juniper tree cover. Not surprisingly, most homes in Sunlit Hills either sit on a sun soaked hill top with wonderful vistas or in a shallow valley with beautiful light and color.
Sunlit Hills enjoys the services of the Sunlit Hills Water District (which also services Hondo Hills), eliminating the need for private wells in most cases. It also benefits from having few street lights to interfere with our brilliant northern New Mexico night skies.
Bobcat Bite is a popular restaurant located at 418 Old Las Vegas Highway in a historic building. Originally a trading post, it later was a gun shop before Rene Clayton turned it into a restaurant in 1953. The name of the restaurant refers to stories of bobcats coming down from the nearby foothills to visit “bobcat friendly” diners who would serve the animals fresh scraps. Pictures of bobcats adorn the walls of the restaurant.
Current owners John and Bonnie Eckre, are justifiably proud of their famous green chile cheeseburger, which appeared in GQ magazine as #12 on its list of “The 20 Hamburgers You Must Eat Before you Die”. Bobcat Bite also appeared in the 2004 documentary Hamburger America, and was mentioned in the Food Network’s “Top American Restaurants: Bon Appétit picks the Best”, hosted by Alton Brown in 2007. If you go in the summer, be warned – the restaurant’s famously tiny capacity only sits 24. Click here for the recipe for the Bobcat Bite green chile cheeseburger. It is delicious!

I recently participated in a 10 home broker open tour of Sunlit Hills homes. All were interesting and had attractive “Santa Fe style” features.
